The harm from cleaning using toxic chemicals
The majority of modern homes have cupboards that are packed full of toxic and polluting cleaning products we all use to make our domestic lives easier when to carry out cleaning tasks. We often pay high prices for these branded, commercial, chemical-based products without giving much thought to the long term health implications to humans and the polluting effect on the environment caused by their manufacture, use and disposal of packaging (if not recyclable).
What’s more, many of us suffer from allergies such as asthma or sinus problems and we don’t realise our health is closely linked to our environment.
he chemicals we use in our homes can have a negative impact on our health. Treating our health conditions caused by allergies should include replacing with non-irritants all the harmful chemicals we use for domestic cleaning. Most of us don’t realise that so many cleaning jobs can be carried out using our own home-made cleaning products. Take, for example, the unpleasant job of cleaning the bathroom. We all want a bathroom and toilet that always smells and looks fresh but we can achieve this completely without chemicals. Our bathrooms harbour many germs and cleaning them is not a job anyone particularly relishes, even when it’s your own bathroom! We risk encountering unpleasant debris, nasty smells, smears and stains.
However, if we don’t clean up regularly, we risk living with a germ-infested space, which is equally unpleasant! Nobody wants to sit on a toilet that’s not been cleaned for weeks, take a bath in a bathtub that’s grimy or shower in a dirty shower cubicle. Getting the inspiration to clean doesn’t come easily but, if you take the time to make your own home-made cleaning products, you will be rewarded with an eco-friendly and efficient solution to cleaning your bathroom.
Make your own fragranced effective toilet cleaner
The following is a guide as to how to make your own effective, environmentally friendly toilet cleaning product. Here’s what you need:
- 160g of sodium bicarbonate
- 60ml of lemon juice
- 1/2 tablespoon of vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide (3%) available in pharmacies
- 15-20 drops of scented oil (e.g. an essential oil with lavender)
If you wish, you can also create a mixture using equal quantities of water and vinegar. This solution is particularly good when it comes to removing encrusted dirt and grime.
Here’s how to mix these ingredients together:
1) Take a bowl and put the baking soda into it.
2) Add the lemon juice.
3) In a separate small container, mix the hydrogen peroxide and vinegar.
4) Combine both compounds by mixing them together drip by drip.
5) Add the drops of scented oil (you can choose any scented oil and essential oils make excellent ingredients e.g. lavender, tea tree, etc…).
6) Take a spoon and use your mixture to form individual balls.
7) Place the individual balls on a piece of greaseproof paper to dry.
8) Using the ingredients is simple. Every time your toilet needs cleaning or appears less fresh than it should be, clean it again using one of your new tablets.
The tablets need at least 4 hours to dry, although it’s best to leave them to dry overnight if possible. When they are dry, gather them together and place them inside a glass container. You can keep this close to the toilet so the balls are handy when you need to pop one inside the toilet bowl to clean.
You can use the toilet brush to disperse the ball and clean the toilet bowl. Making your homemade toilet cleaner does take a little time and you need to source the ingredients, but everything you need is inexpensive and easily available. You will find that replacing toxic cleaning chemicals with your own products is rewarding and you can add an individual twist with your own scented oil. Using an eco-friendly toilet cleaner is great for the environment and will also be better for your health and that of your family. If you like this idea and find that your homemade toilet cleaner is effective and pleasant to use, you can share this idea with your friends and family!
